We finally had a 'home day' after many mornings on the go, and it was so nice to lounge around in our pj's without too much to do. So, taking full advantage of our time, I pulled out one of Dyl's birthday gifts I bought him titled, "Nature Explorers". He was, of course, thrilled to see the package...$5.99 clearance find at Borders... but we just hadn't had the opportunity to dig in. So, today was the big day. We spent the morning in the front yard looking for "nature" in our pajamas but the boys were soon quite disappointed. I should have remembered that pest control, while good for controlling pests, is a bit of a kill joy when you really want to have those creepy crawly creatures around. Bugs were at a minimum. And even though I cancelled our service recently (why pay for pests to be gone when we will be too??), it appears that those lovely chemicals really do linger for awhile...
So no bugs. Except ants, but they were just not nearly interesting enough...then I had an idea. Get a shovel, find a bucket...we must have worms...right? Oh, yes, plenty of worms. And Dylan was ecstatic. He got down on his hands and knees and dug up those worms to his hearts content. And every one that he found and gently dropped into his cup...you'd have thought he'd have birthed those worms himself he was so proud. After a good amount of time worm hunting, I told the kids they needed to return the worms back into the soil so we could make lunch. And, just as I feared, Dylan was heart broken. Christian was fine of course, ready to be done with the slimy little pests (which he never touched anyway), but Dyl was emotionally attached to every single one of them... and in no way would part with even one. Needless to say, we now have a nice little worm habitat in an old large yogurt container...in the back yard for the night. I did let them stay in the house for the day, but had to put my foot down somewhere...the same goes for the car. After the world's longest meltdown I was still not in any way going to take the worms in the car with us to the park, luckily Dad was there to back me up...lord knows they would have ended up tipped over, everywhere. I could just imagine, Shelbi, holding one up to her open mouth ready to plop a big juicy one in before we could get to her...no, no worms commuting with us today...
But it did get worse. After a long day of worms, Dyl had a new passion. And when we had finished saying prayers, and Christian went out to feed the dogs while I was in my bedroom getting ready to rock Shelbi...it happened. Dylan came running in with a clenched fist, beaming with pride, "Mom!! Guess what I found in the dog's food!!!!...". My mind immediately raced back to the rainstorm from a week ago...the one where I had wondered if the lid had been shut on the dog food, but heard no complaints of sogginess from my eldest who is ever aware of those sorts of mishaps...and I knew. I screamed..he cried, shocked and disappointed at my reaction...my dear son had come into my room ...with a handful of maggots...!!!!
