Five years ago today, laying in a hospital bed, holding my newborn baby boy with white fuzz on his head and the bluest eyes I'd ever seen...I remember the nurse came in and told me, "There is a bassinet right here for him, you don't really have to hold him all night...". She obviously didn't know who she was talking to. But I was polite, "I know, but I keep my babies in bed with me...been there done that, thank you!" (smile, kiss kiss) End of discussion. And five years later I know for sure I have no regrets...!
This little boy of mine is something else. He can light up a room faster than any kid I've ever met. Laughs and humor come so naturally to him; he loves to keep everyone entertained with his quirkiness... And he takes after his Daddy and uncles so very much, with that magnetic personality. Kids are immediately drawn to him, adults are always charmed by him, and little old ladies will stop just to admire those blue eyes. And quite frequently some middle aged woman with grown children of her own will stop me just to say that he reminds her so much of her own little boy, now grown or away at college, with the same white hair and mischievous little grin. "Dylan the Menace" as my sister-in-laws mother once told me...quite accurate for sure...
The other night he pulled out his brother's skateboarding protective gear, and was insistent that his dad and I help put on every single piece... one on each wrist, elbow and knee...it took longer than you'd expect, I assure you. And even though I was getting annoyed, we kept working because, hey, it's Dylan and these are just the things you deal with...Once all was in place I returned to whatever it was I was doing and didn't think much of it. It wasn't until about ten minutes later that I saw why he was so insistent about all of this gear...he had a plan. As I stood in the kitchen by the dishwasher, I watched him back up all the way to the living room, take a good running start across the tile, then immediately launch himself on to his belly and slide across the kitchen floor... He was thrilled. When I couldn't help but crack up laughing, I asked him, "So is this why you needed all of that gear on, so you could slide across the kitchen tile?!" He just looked at me with the biggest grin and responded, gleaming with pride, "Yeah, Mom!! I'm flying... I'm Buzz Lightyear!!". Then he picked himself up and began the whole scene all over again. About twenty times in fact. By then he had his brother wishing he'd been the one to have thought of it... The things this kid comes up with...Let's just say it's probably a real good thing I'm homeschooling...!
So, here we are, on the brink of a new year with our little Dilly Doo. A little boy who can drive me batty with his inability to stay on task, yet can melt my heart moments later with that ornery little grin...He's one in a million... we get to take "Kitty" where ever we go, must always comb his hair in the "faux hawt", and can't climb into bed without five to ten treasures at minimum (yes, he does sleep in his own now!)... but He's one of the greatest gifts we've ever received... God is good... Happy 5th Birthday Pickle, we love you to pieces!!
