A Boy's Life...

We've sure been having a whole lot of fun around here lately! The boys had their first mountain bike race last weekend and it was pretty darned cute... Dad was very proud. We were there for Justin's race initially, but he got sick the night before and ended up forfeiting his position. The boys however, were rarin' to go! They loved racing around the little dirt track, complete with a few hills and twists, just like the big guys. I was pretty surprised that they were racing together, and didn't know how Dyl would do being that all 7 and unders were grouped together. But they did their daddy proud, and for their first race ever Christian took 2nd and Dylan 3rd, coming in shortly after big his brother. Not bad for a 4-year-old! They were all smiles trekking up the hills and racing down the other side. There were maybe 7 or 8 kids in the whole thing and our boys gave them all a run for their money! Sister made it a bit of a long day, bolting off every chance she got, sometimes heading straight for the track into oncoming riders. That girl... But what a fun time. They are already asking when they can race again...luckily Jus has another one in April, The Sea Otter Classic, that has a kids race for them. We're slowly merging into the life of a biking family...
On Monday we had our annual "Supercharged Science" class at the school. The gal who created it, Aurora, is a rocket-scientist-homeschooling-mom-genius. Seriously... makes me feel very unqualified!! But everything is so hands on and fun... She takes concepts that should go right over your head, and explains them in a way that a kindergartner would understand....uh, and they do. She just makes it so simple! Plus, she plays with fire, which the kids think is sooooo cool.
For our first experiment, the kids had to take long halved tubing and some marbles, and make "roller coaster" tracks out of them. The object was to see how many loops and turns they could make without letting the marble drop. What a great way to teach, and implement, physics! They worked in teams for about 30 minutes creating and recreating tracks to get all of the speed and angles worked out correctly. It was pretty exciting. Next, we went outside and got to mix chemicals and learn about physical versus chemical reactions, while making slime and bouncy balls. I probably retained more of the info than they did, but watching them get excited about science (NOT my favorite subject in school) was priceless. Yes, taking them all to the grocery store is a horrible, horrible event, but these endeavors make this life worth the sacrifice....most days...
Wow, these boys are growing up so fast...some days they are driving me near insanity arguing over who's feet are touching who's, or catapulting over the backs of my couches, but then I stop (usually at night when they are quiet and sleeping) and realize how quicly it all goes! Dylan starts kindergarten next year which hardly seems possible, and Christian is 7 going on 27... Both so different yet one in the same... And I have been given the privilege of experiencing it all...
