Our Social Studies project for "Story of the World"...
You guessed it... The Nile River and Fertile Crescent!!

Hieroglyphics and Cuneiform on our "clay" tablets :)

just staying entertained is good!

After a very rocky start...ok, it was only a week....we're finding our balance and back in the game. We've had a great 2nd week, with much help from our new favorite book (I can hardly call it 'curriculum', it's too much fun), "Story of the World". Four volumes of world history written in story form to teach history from the beginning of time until present, all in sequential order. What a concept!! And it's written from a Biblical world view, which of course I love. Any way, the first 3 chapters were the Nomads, Ancient Egypt, and First Writings. And amazingly, even with a bachelor's degree in teaching, I knew almost none of this...pretty sad. I am learning more with my kindergartner and 3rd grader than I did in 4 (or 5) years of college!! :)
So I am happy to say that I am no longer contemplating throwing the boys on the bus...it looks like we will be enjoying another year of fun and learning at home. Starting 2 kids had me a little freaked out, which made me become quite over zealous and panicky, resulting in 'psycho mom' like behavior...but it's behind me. Fortunately I have an incredibly supportive, and blunt, husband who can tell me to snap out of it, pace myself, and get a grip because I can do this and it will be great. Sometimes I just need to hear it I guess. So needless to say, with a little bit of help from a weekly planner (which I use very loosely), and a whole lot of slowing down, we are doing great. Next week we are headed to the Wind Wolves reserve for an awesome field trip...can't wait. And as Jus told me recently, "you don't even know what next week will bring, let alone 5 years from now...", we are now enjoying life one day at a time... for the rest of the year... even if I do have it on my calendar :)

Found your blog by random clicking on blogs--have to say I loved the "NILE CRESCENT" My husband is Egyptian & yes, the Nile (el Nil they call it) looks JUST like that! We live in Florida now. Very much enjoyed seeing your happy lovely family; I applaud you & your husband for taking the home schooling path & providing so many wonderful experiences for your beautiful children! At a glance---it looks to me that YOUR family is what is RIGHT with America! Yay for You!
