Baby It's Cold Outside...!!

Ava and Ruby right before the inevitable happened... they took a dive and little Ruby got a nasty snow burn on her face...and on my watch!!

Our gang of "Big Kids" ...they don't look so big from this angle...

Snow bunny!! (or kitty!)

The faster the better for these two little dare devils... Trent and Dylan

Our first trip to the snow..in several years!! I'm not much for frost bite so I prefer to just admire it from afar for the most part...like really, really far...on my TV or something. But this year, for some odd reason, I was itching to get to the snow and play with the kids! So we invited our niece and nephew to join us, loaded all five kids in the Sequoia, (packed to the brim in snow gear for everybody!) and headed up to Auntie Mel's cabin for the day.

And what a day it was. The daddy's insisted that the little wussy spot we had picked near the house wouldn't suffice, so we had to drive a few extra miles over to a more satisfactory location. I was crowded. It was sunny and the snow had melted an refroze, so it was slippery. And worst of all, it was dangerous!! The hill that Uncle Clint found for us ended abruptly in... the road. The dads stayed at the bottom to catch a few times, but that didn't last. And since I had no desire to play frogger with my children, we decided to trek higher up the hill for a safer option. It took forever. I soon found out why snow boots are a necessary evil. Let's just say that Uggs have very little traction, and when you walk on ice in them it's a bit like re-enacting a scene from Bambi. Then add our five kids to that. Are we having fun yet? Even the kids were crying and complaining! So back to the cabin we go, headed for our original spot that Auntie Mel had picked out for us in the first place!! Only now the four toddlers were too tuckered out to enjoy any more of this "fun", so us mommies got to take them back for a good princess movie instead (Ezra's vote doesn't count yet!). The daddies wrangled up our four big kids and they actually played for a good hour or two before heading back for a (late!) lunch. I missed the whole thing. Of course, they played around the whole rest of the afternoon in the yard, but my visions of sledding, throwing snowballs, and making snow angels soon melted faster than the snow in the California sun! "Flexible, Kati. Be flexible."

Despite all of that, we did have a good time. We always do with the Stevensons, even after 16 years together! And it was fairly relaxing with all of the kids playing and getting along sooo extremely well. I only suppose that is God's way of telling me to quit complaining about the snow. If I don't like it so much, why should I get the satisfaction of enjoying it? Hey, I never said I didn't appreciate the beauty of it! I just don't want to live in it. It's... cold! I guess I'd rather melt than freeze. But Ezra and Shelbi showed us all how to really keep warm by the fire up in the snowy mountains... I think I like their idea even better!!
